According to Education Secretary Sir Armin Luistro “(629, 703 students) choose academic strand.” (145, 844) students are enrolled in HUMSS. What is HUMSS all about? Basically, Humanities and Social Science revolve around enhancing a student’s reading, writing, and communication skills. This is preparatory strand that rains future educators, lawyers, peace makers and psychologist. Honing these skills are crucial for them establish effective communication with people when they are interacting. For these reasons, half of the subjects involved in this strand focus on language and speech. Basic subjects like mathematics and science are still included, though they are not that advanced since they do not belong to the major subjects to the said strand because as you can observe students who focus in this strand are interested on doing social services in the society.
First of all there is so much more than learning about people in taking up Humanities and Social Sciences. HUMSS enable students to come out of their shell and boost their confidence and practice their public speaking and skills in debating. The students from this strand are also called “HUMANISTAS”, because they have a control of their own behavior and has a freedom of choice. Students examine the significance of traditions and shared values within a society. How societies and economies operate aid they are changing over time. They also examine developments that bringing about change. The ways people, places, ideas and events are perceived and connected students are provided with opportunities to explore different perceptions of people, places, ideas and events. They develop and understanding of the interdependent nature of the world and the interrelationships within and between the natural environment, human communities, and economies. They explore how people, ideas, and events are connected over time and increasingly interconnected across local, national, regional and global contexts. They studies the right and responsibilities of individuals and groups over time and in different contexts. Even though they are constantly degraded by others because they choose HUMSS instead of complex strand like STEM or ABM, they still handle situations and people with equity, understanding and consideration because they’re also studying political science, literature, anthropology, philosophy, linguistics, communication and psychology. This strand is for learners who aim to take up journalism, communication arts, liberal arts, education and other social science courses in college. For example teachers, priest, tourism, diplomat, lawyers, police officers, news casters, writers, journalists, filmmakers, and even actor or actresses.
Furthermore, like Robin Williams stated in the movie, Dead Poets Society, “No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.” Like any other strand the HUMSS strand will only seem difficult if you take it up despite the fact that your passion and happiness come from something else. But if your passion lies in learning more about people and how to deal with them effectively, then this just might be the right strand for you. That’s hoe impressive humanities and social sciences is, it can open your mind to other possibilities and this strand is for the students who want to explore the different sides of the world while being civil.
